Submission Grappling

Wrap your legs around someone and choke them

Fighting is about much more than punches and kicks. At Submission Grappling, we don’t hit each other; instead, we take people to the ground, control them, pin them and make them give up (or “tap out”) by choking them or putting them in a joint lock. It’s the art of folding someone’s clothes while they’re still wearing them.

If you want to be able to throw someone twice your size, be un-pinnable, or just to meet cool queer people and get choked by them - and all without a single mention of the Joe Rogan podcast - then BENT Collective’s Submission Grappling classes might be for you!

WHEN:

Wednesdays, 6:30-8pm

Thursdays, 6:30-8pm

Sundays, 5:30-7pm

Submission Grappling can be difficult to picture, but essentially imagine how you would beat someone in a fight if you weren’t allowed to throw any strikes. We teach:

  • Takedowns: From trips to throws to huge double legs, you’ll learn how to get your opponent down to the mat quickly and decisively.

  • Submissions: Whether you prefer to choke your opponent or bend their limbs until they have to submit, we’ll teach you how to safely apply submission holds that will finish a fight.

  • Ground control: Pinning someone is about more than just lying on top of them. We’ll teach you the different positions on the ground, how to move between them and how to keep someone controlled.

  • Fighting from your back: While being on top is always better (if that’s your preference), you’ll need to learn how to defend yourself, reverse position and even attack when someone puts you on your back.

Our coach

Zoë has been grappling for nearly 15 years, mostly in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) but with forays into Catch Wrestling and Luta Livre as well. She is a purple belt in BJJ and currently coaches at Onward Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Leeds as well as at BENT Collective.

She aims to teach classes that are fun, approachable and memorable while getting away from some of the traditional teaching styles that have held grappling back. Her favourite choke is the Anaconda.
